In a new step to enhance efforts to combat obesity and diabetes in Egypt, the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) has approved the release of "Mounjaro" injections in the Egyptian market for the treatment of obesity. This comes after an agreement was signed between, EVA Pharma, the leading pharmaceutical manufacturer, and the global company "Eli Lilly," to make the treatment available in the local market, ensuring its availability from a reliable source.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Iman Hussein Kamel, Acting Dean of the Medical Research Institute at the National Research Center, emphasized the importance of providing "Mounjaro," a subcutaneous injection used to treat obesity and diabetes, through trusted channels. She explained that obesity is not just an appearance issue, but a disease linked to more than 200 chronic conditions. She noted that "Mounjaro" represents a new step toward addressing obesity in Egypt, stressing the need for it to be dispensed from accredited pharmacies under medical supervision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Amr Matar, President of the Egyptian Society for Therapeutic Nutrition and Head of the Therapeutic Nutrition Unit at the Kasr Al-Ainy Al-Faransawy Hospital, emphasized that obesity is not just about weight gain but also affects overall quality of life. He added that providing medications locally will benefit Egyptian patients.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Khalifa Abdullah, Professor of Internal Medicine and Diabetes at the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University, stressed that "Mounjaro" injections must be obtained from a reliable source. He warned against using the treatment without medical consultation, explaining that misuse could lead to side effects.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;
Dr. Abram Wagih, Egypt Cluster Head at EVA Pharma, affirmed the company's commitment to providing the latest pioneering treatments to serve patients in Egypt and more than 70 countries where the company operates. He emphasized that providing proper healthcare needs is a human right. He also highlighted that, through collaboration with Eli Lilly, the treatment was made available in Egypt before many European countries, making Egypt one of the first 15 countries globally to provide “Mounjaro” to patients.

CAIRO, October 3, 2024&nbsp;–<a href="https://c212.net/c/link/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3735678-1&amp;h=1130473503&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.evapharma.com%2F&amp;a=EVA+Pharma" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'IBM Plex Sans Arabic',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; color: #007bff; border: none windowtext 1.0pt; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0in; padding: 0in;">EVA Pharma</a>&nbsp;announced today a non-exclusive, royalty-free voluntary licensing agreement signed with <a href="https://www.gilead.com/news/news-details/2024/gilead-signs-royalty-free-voluntary-licensing-agreements-with-six-generic-manufacturers-to-increase-access-to-lenacapavir-for-hiv-prevention-in-high-incidence-resource-limited-countries">Gilead</a>, allowing EVA Pharma to manufacture and supply generic lenacapavir in form of active pharmaceutical ingredient and finished pharmaceutical product. This agreement includes the technology transfer of know-how to make and use lenacapavir allowing for sustainable accessibility to lenacapavir in 120 high-incidence, resource-limited countries through EVA Pharma’s local manufacturing capabilities and strong foothold in Africa.

The agreement covers lenacapavir for HIV treatment in heavily treatment-experienced (HTE) adults with multi-drug-resistant HIV, as well as lenacapavir for HIV prevention (pending approval). Gilead is exploring frameworks such as the European Medicines Agency’s EU Medicines for All with the aim of expediting both U.S. FDA procedures and the attainment of WHO prequalification. This will enable EVA Pharma to submit its high-quality generic lenacapavir for multiple regulatory authorities to support demand and broaden accessibility across 120 countries.

In collaboration with Gilead we have been setting numerous firsts in the area of generic voluntary licensing, from combatting HCV to making remdesivir available for COVID patients. And now, we embark on another significant milestone by supplying lenacapavir to patients across the continent, including South Africa for the first time”

Of the six generic manufacturers in Gilead’s voluntary licensing agreement, EVA Pharma is the sole local manufacturer in Africa. Responding to the urgency of this shared mission, EVA Pharma expects to complete lenacapavir API manufacturing by the end of 2024, following the completion of the tech-transfer from Gilead, paving the way for the production of lenacapavir finished product. The company expects to begin supplying the high-quality, African-made lenacapavir within 25 months. Leveraging its extensive pan-African reach, EVA Pharma will supply the medicine to 120 countries, with the first phase of export including 18 countries representing the highest incidence rate (about 70% of the HIV burden in the countries named in the license) to receive lenacapavir as quickly as possible. These countries are Botswana, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Philippines, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

About Lenacapavir
Lenacapavir is approved in multiple countries for the treatment of adults with multi-drug-resistant HIV in combination with other antiretrovirals. The use of lenacapavir for HIV prevention is investigational and the safety and efficacy of lenacapavir for this use have not been established.
The multi-stage mechanism of action of lenacapavir is distinguishable from other currently approved classes of antiviral agents. While most antivirals act on just one stage of viral replication, lenacapavir is designed to inhibit HIV at multiple stages of its lifecycle and has no known cross resistance exhibited in vitro to other existing drug classes.
Lenacapavir is being evaluated as a long-acting option in multiple ongoing and planned early and late-stage clinical studies in Gilead's HIV prevention and treatment research program. Lenacapavir is being developed as a foundation for potential future HIV therapies with the goal of offering both long-acting oral and injectable options with several dosing frequencies, in combination or as a mono agent, that help address individual needs and preferences of people and communities affected by HIV.
